a taste of iran

I’m 7,5h ahead of Rio, in Tehran. Today it was my second day here.

I arrived around 2:00AM at my friend’s place. After I stepped out the taxi, she readily opened their building’s door, and I could see her looking through the half-way opened door, with her scarf covering her head.

She offered me some meal before I went to bed:

She lives up north in Tehran (from their kitchen window we can see a not distant more than 3,000 metre-high mountain, still with snow on the top, despite the great heat in the city), with her parents, who are actually from Shiraz, central-south Iran, and her brother, a medicine student who is a Barça fanatic fan.

She has a B.A. in History, and she’s very well traveled within Iran, besides enjoying photographing. Her Dad, a truly educated men, with perfect English, is a retired Ph.D. engineer and University professor who has studied at Berkeley, US. We held very interesting talks on history and politics, for hours and hours. My friend’s Mom doesn’t speak English, but she’s an excellent cook !!!

Yesterday I had a marvelous lunch at home: fesenjun (sauce of grated pomegranate, walnuts, aubergine and cardamon served over roast chicken and rice).

I may say I’m quite lucky. On the airplane from Europe to Tehran there was an Iranian couple from Esfahan, and they said this special dish is not commonly found in restaurants, but rather at people’s places.

It is, indeed, quite delicious!! It has a somewhat sweet taste (from the pomegranate, a typical fruit from Persia, now found in the West). And the rice is long and thin, similar to India’s baasmati, and with crunchy pieces. Simply a paradise for our tongue!
